The Wrong Trousers

(Sudan) People the world over go to great lengths in which to explain just how gracious and magnanimous ‘Islam’ is and can be. They cite how Islam was the first to afford equal rights to women and how they (in contrast to Christianity) had no problems with allowing non followers of their faith to live amongst them.

So imagine my surprise (Not) to come across this story about how a party of non-Islamic women who, when lunching in a restaurant in Khartoum, were arrested by 30 members (when I say members, I do of course mean members as in pricks) of the Islamic morality police and found guilty of breaching the will of Allah for (wait for it) dressing 'indecently'.

Yup, it seems that wearing trousers is a huge big no no in Sharia-run Northern Sudan, and for carrying out the rash act of tempting muslimkind, the 12 women in question have been sentenced to a good old religious (this is going to hurt me more than it will you) flogging. 10 of the ladies pleaded guilty so as to get it all over with. They got 10 lashes and, I presume, a nasty letter to take home to their husbands.

The other 2 have stood their ground and consulted with their lawyers quoting how Sharia law isn’t applicable to non-Muslims. Problem is, if they fail in their task of quoting Islamic law to the Mullahs, that 10 strokes of the cane becomes 40.

So much for Islam is gracious and magnanimous then.
